Home Sweet Home - excerpt form novel

The island of Trinidad holds a magnetic attraction for diverse ethnicity and races. It has a small Caucasian population whose descendants were from Spain, France and England in that order. These families though the minority, had power, land and wealth as a result of their ancestral backgrounds. Their families had been slave masters and the wealthy adventurers. The original labour force had come from the first nation people, the Amerindians, then the enslaved West Africans, and after slavery was abolished, the indentured Chinese, Portuguese and Indian labourers. Syrians and Lebanese came along later to explore trade and business. But something about the island’s innate sexuality caused an interracial phenomenon to occur. Despite the best efforts of the stalwart or the distraught, races began to integrate leaving unidentifiable offspring who could only be labelled as mixed.
